Eight staff members of HospiceCare, Inc. were in Jefferson City on April 7th to be awarded the MHPCA Heart of Hospice Program Award. The organization was honored for its innovative children’s grief program, Carter’s Clubhouse, at a luncheon that included approximately 160 hospice workers from a variety of area hospices. The MHPCA (Missouri Hospice & Palliative Care Association) Heart of Hospice Program Award is designed to recognize a program within an affiliated MHPCA member hospice that has implemented or developed an added service to a designated population; or enhanced community outreach, thus enhancing the quality of life for those in the hospice service area. Gayla Roberts, Carter’s Clubhouse Program Director and Fred McDaniel, Executive Director, accepted the award. “The difference the program has made in the kids’ lives is amazing,” said Roberts. “They’re learning techniques that help them express their grief, and they’re having fun. I don’t think we could’ve ever imagined just how successful it would be in such a short time.” Carter’s Clubhouse, which was established in December of 2008, now has approximately 60 children enrolled and welcomes children from ages 4 to 18 who need support as they deal with various grief issues. The group meets on the first Monday of each month at the North College Center on the campus of MAC from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. There is no charge for the program. Fred McDaniel, Executive Director, sees the program as part of HospiceCare’s commitment to the community. “We felt it was critical that something be done to address the needs of grieving children in our community, and Carter’s Clubhouse creates a positive environment in which they could do just that.” For any questions, to enroll your child(ren) into Carter’s Clubhouse, or to request a presentation for your club or group, call Gayla Roberts at 701-2504.
